How to Replace an Oxygen Sensor?
1. You will need these tools:
- 5/8 deep-well socket
- Breaker bar
- 10mm, 17mm sockets (2)
- Torque wrench
1. Make sure the car is turned off and cool. Open the hood and detach the negative terminal on your battery using the 10mm socket.
2. Remove the air intake assembly to expose the oxygen sensor. There are three 8mm nuts that need to be removed before you can remove the intake tube. Use your 17mm socket for this step.
3. Once nuts are removed, pull out a rubber hose that is attached to the mass airflow sensor underneath the car. Detach mass airflow sensor connector. Use your 17mm socket for this step.
4. Remove the oxygen sensor by using the 17mm wrench to loosen the nut while holding down on the sensor itself with a 10mm wrench. Do not completely remove the nut, just break it free so you can unscrew the oxygen sensor out of its bracket.
5. Once this step is completed, you can now remove the oxygen sensor from its bracket and replace it with a new one. Do not forget to apply some dielectric grease on your new sensor before installation.
6. Insert a new oxygen sensor and tighten the nut down while holding on to the oxygen sensor itself using 10mm wrench until it’s snug. Do not over-tighten as this will damage the sensor. 8. Re-attach mass airflow sensor and re-attach air intake tube back to air filter box and oxygen sensor (tighten down the 3 nuts with your 10mm socket and ratchet). 9. Reconnect the negative terminal on the battery and close the hood.
what to do After Replacing Oxygen Sensor?
This step is optional, but if you want to reset your computer system after replacing the oxygen sensor, go to the next step “how to initialize a new oxygen sensor in a car.” Otherwise, skip this step and continue on with “how to drive and accelerate after replacing an oxygen engine oxygen sensor”.
2. Initializing a new oxygen sensor in a car:
1. You need to use your diagnostic machine and turn off the CEL (check engine light).
2. Start your car and let it run for at least 1 minute.
3. If there is no check engine light or cel, then you can proceed with driving and accelerating after replacing an oxygen sensor. If the cel remains on, check your work and make sure you didn’t miss anything.
How to Drive and Accelerate After Replacing an Oxygen Sensor:
1. Drive nice and easy for the first 100 miles or so (use cruise control when possible). This will allow the computer to learn its new fuel trim settings based on your driving habits.
2. After about 100 miles, you can begin accelerating normally and drive as you normally would.
3. If the cel (check engine light) comes on at any point during your trip, immediately reduce your speed (use cruise control when possible) and try to determine which pedal position is causing the cel/light to appear:

1. Insert the probe of an obd2 scanner into the car’s obd2 port below the steering wheel.
2. Start your car and let it idle until it reaches normal operating temperature (the temp gauge is in the middle or slightly past halfway).
3. Put on your seat belt,. Make sure the parking brake is set and begin accelerating from a complete stop while watching the check engine light on your dash. If the light does not turn on, then your new oxygen sensor(s) are working and you didn’t miss anything during installation.
4. Keep in mind that some car models require an obd2 scanner to read which pedal position is causing the cel/light to appear. If you don’t have immediate access to an obd2 scanner, try your best to take your car in when your gas cap light comes on. This means it’s time for an emissions check and they will scan your car for free! It’s always nice when someone else does the dirty work for you.
5. If you’re still unsure about whether or not your oxygen sensors are working, drive the car in a city with an obd2 scanner for about 10 minutes and have them scan it to check for any emission problems.
